Employees, not Independent Contractors!
Our Sitters are all Employees, not Independent Contractors!
Almost all pet sitting companies in Santa Barbara operate their business with Indpendent Contractors (IC's). It is much more expensive for Snoopy’s to have employees instead of IC’s, but we want to provide you with the safest and best possible service. Hiring employees means payroll taxes, workers comp insurance, liability insurance, unemployment insurance and Social Security tax. In addition, all our sitters will be paid higher than minimum wage to ensure high quality applicants.
So why are we doing it? Hiring Employees has many advantages for you as a client:
According to the IRS’s classification of IC’s, employers are unable to exert any kind of control or tell IC’s how to perform their sit for you, which is really unacceptable if we want to provide the best service for clients and pets. Employers are unable to correct an IC who doesn’t do their job as expected and they are not allowed to train the staff.
In Santa Barbara (and all over the State of California) pet sitting companies with employees are required to provide their staff with Workers Comp Insurance. However, many pet sitting companies hire independent contractors to cuts costs. Independent contractors are supposed to have their own Worker’s Comp Insurance and Liability Insurance, but often they are unable to afford this costly insurance, and this means that you as the homeowner might get stuck with the bill. Tapping into your insurance means higher premiums for you.
Snoopy’s provides all our sitters with Worker’s Comp insurance as well as Liability insurance and bonding, so there will never be a question of whether your sitter is insured.
Did you know that Independent Contractors can send anyone into your home to do the sit (subcontractors)? You may hire a pet sitter who then decides to have their 15-year old niece take care of your cat. This has never happened at Snoopy’s, but if it did, the IC would be completely within their legal rights. This is completely unacceptable to me, and I’m sure to you as well. As employees, the only sitters that will enter your home will be Snoopy’s employees. All of Snoopy’s sitters, including myself, will continue to work as a team. If the assigned sitter can’t make it to your house for any reason, another Snoopy’s employee will be given detailed information about the sit and cover it for the employee who can’t make it.
